Containership Leasing
Global Ship Lease owns and operates a fleet of containerships, specialized oceangoing vessels that carry containerized cargoes on a worldwide basis.
Global Ship Lease’s containerships carry a wide variety of cargoes within 20-ft and 40-ft containers, including everything from dishwashers and phones to fresh fruit, wine, and intermediate industrial components. These cargos are booked and carried by the Container Shipping Lines to which we lease our ships.
For a current list of Global Ship Lease’s customers (aka “charterers”), go to Fleet page.
Global Ship Lease provides fully crewed containerships to a variety of leading global liner companies. These liner companies utilize Global Ship Lease’s containerships as part of their logistics networks for the carriage of containerized cargo.
Global Ship Lease provides containerships to container shipping companies. It is those container shipping companies, and third parties such as freight forwarders, who aggregate cargo and transport those cargoes around the world. If you have containerized cargo to carry, we recommend that you contact either a container shipping company (examples of which can be found on our Fleet page, as “Charterers”) or a freight forwarder.
Global Ship Lease primarily leases its containerships to its liner company customers through the use of “Time Charter” contracts, which generally have durations spanning anywhere from a few months to several years. During this time, Global Ship Lease is paid a fixed daily rate for the use of the vessel and crew, with fuel costs borne by the customer.
- While Global Ship Lease’s containerships are employed on Time Charter contracts, their fuel costs are borne by the customer (the charterer). Fuel-efficient vessels such as Global Ship Lease’s new design widebeam containerships often command a premium charter rate in the market, reflecting the cost savings that they offer to charterers.
- In any interim between contracts or if a vessel is otherwise off-hire, fuel costs for that vessel are borne by Global Ship Lease.
